Our Process

Surface Active Foam Fractionation (SAFF®)

Separate and Concentrate PFAS

SAFF® is manufactured by EPOC Enviro and distributed in North America by Crystal Clean. It is a sustainable, physical separation process that uses biomimicry to harness the power of pure air to effectively and rapidly remove PFAS from contaminated waters. This robust technology is unaffected by the presence of co-contaminants, even at high concentrations.

SAFF® technology has successfully treated hundreds of millions of gallons of PFAS contaminated waters and been deployed in many applications, including landfill leachates and complex industrial waste waters. It is a modular, containerized solution for rapid on-site deployment and commissioning.

How It Works

The PFAS-impacted waters designated for treatment are fed into the SAFF® unit for treatment.

In the primary stage, PFAS-impacted waters flow through several primary tanks to separate PFAS from the water using air bubbles. Concentration rates at this stage are around 50,000 times

In the secondary/tertiary stage, the PFAS concentrate goes through additional concentration tanks to generate a PFAS hyper-concentrate. This concentrates the PFAS to a factor up to two million times. This means one gallon of PFAS hyper-concentrate is generated from two million gallons of treated water.

Treated water—having undergone PFAS removal of up to 99.9%—is only discharged once it meets all applicable discharge permit requirements. Meanwhile, the resulting PFAS hyper-concentrate is securely contained, bulked for handling, and prepared for final disposal through approved methods.

Case Study: Destroying PFAS in Landfill Leachate

CLosed-Loop Collection, Transportation, Concentration, and Destruction

A landfill with high levels of PFAS detected in it’s landfill leachate needed a partner to collect and treat the contaminated leachate in compliance with state regulations.

The Crystal Clean team delivered the flexible 4never™ solution to provide turnkey services to collect, transport, concentrate, and destroy the PFAS in the contaminated leachate. This project used Surface Active Foam Fractionation (SAFF®) and Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) to separate, concentrate, and destroy the PFAS.

Nationwide Network, Personalized Support

With a nationwide network of branches, waste treatment facilities, and service providers, Crystal Clean and the 4never™ teams are always within reach. Crystal Clean operates more than 130 service branches, industrial services facilities, and waste recovery centers serving the continental United States.
