PFAS Destruction and Disposal Methods

PFAS Breakdown with Supercritical Water Oxidation

SCWO uses high heat and pressure to bring water into a supercritical state, at 374 degrees Celsius and 3,200 PSI, where it acts as both a solvent and oxidizer. In this environment, PFAS compounds are rapidly broken down into carbon dioxide, water, and fluoride salts. This closed-loop process offers near-total destruction with no hazardous byproducts, making it one of the most effective and sustainable PFAS treatment methods available.

Crystal Clean’s has partnered with 374Water to offer supercritical water oxidation as a PFAS destruction method, using 374Water’s AirSCWO™ technology.

Long Term PFAS Containment

Deep Well Injection (DWI) is a permitted method of long-term PFAS disposal that involves placing treated liquid waste into deep, isolated rock formations far below drinking water sources. This process uses engineered wells and multiple protective layers to ensure PFAS remains securely contained, minimizing risk to the environment. DWI is highly regulated and designed for the safe, permanent sequestration of persistent compounds like PFAS.

Safeguarding the Environment from PFAS

Secure hazardous waste landfilling provides a regulated and engineered solution for the long-term containment of PFAS-bearing solids. These landfills feature multiple barrier systems, leachate controls, and strict compliance monitoring to prevent groundwater contamination. While not a destruction method, secure landfilling is an EPA-permitted option for safely isolating PFAS waste from the environment.

Crystal Clean owns and operates a Subtitle C Landfill located in Ohio that has on-site capabilities to manage PFAS liquids and solids, including soil, sludges, and debris.

PFAS Destruction at the Molecular Level

Thermal destruction uses extremely high temperatures to break PFAS molecules apart at the atomic level. Specialized systems ensure sufficient heat, residence time, and oxygen to minimize harmful byproducts and maximize PFAS destruction. This method is tightly controlled, making it an effective solution for eliminating PFAS in solids, sludges, and concentrated liquids.

CLosed-Loop Collection, Transportation, Concentration, and Destruction

A landfill with high levels of PFAS detected in it’s landfill leachate needed a partner to collect and treat the contaminated leachate in compliance with state regulations.

The Crystal Clean team delivered the flexible 4never™ solution to provide turnkey services to collect, transport, concentrate, and destroy the PFAS in the contaminated leachate. This project used Surface Active Foam Fractionation (SAFF®) and Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) to separate, concentrate, and destroy the PFAS.
